‘Being paired with a chair at the local National Childbirth Trust anti-natal classes did nothing for my ego. Unlike the other mums who were with their husbands, the only arms supporting me through the breathing exercises were wooden ones.’

My daughter’s childhood in the 90s was very different to my upbringing in the 60s. As neither of us knew what it was like to have our Dads at home, the book is written as a letter to my Father highlighting the moments he never got to share. It is for anyone who has been a child, if only to prove when we lose someone special, love comes from unexpected places to fill the space in our heart.

I liked the juxtaposition of the little girl, with her mom's memories as a little girl. Each chapter ends with a note to Mom's own 'not in the picture' dad. And that makes it a little sad, and barbed.
Thankfully, the stories depict scenes to cheer and sometimes, simultaneously shake your head. Some minor references are clearly from English and not American culture, so I didn't 'get' them all completely.

The Things You Missed While You Were Away edition by Joan Ellis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

When a book can make you feel sad one minute then have you snorting with laughter the next you know you are in for an interesting read. Joan Ellis had me locked in reading this memoir of her childhood onwards to being a mother herself and sharing her own daughter's childhood. All influenced by one thing - her absent father.

But don't think this is one of those "woe is me" memoirs because Joan's incredible wit and humour shines through the whole way. Some sentences were just laugh out loud funny and it's one of the aspect of Joan that I just love. The memoir is very down to earth and I don't actually like reading memoirs but I wanted to read this one so much that despite a gifted copy decided to purchase it for my also, it's a special book.

Joan shares at the end of each chapter a short message to her absent father about what he missed and what she wanted from him. Something girls with absent fathers everywhere will connect to on a heart level. Too many girls (and boys) out there with absent fathers full stop.

I laughed along with Joan as she shared some of the funny moments that her creative, confident "sometimes older than her years" daughter experiences in early childhood. As a mother myself I could very much relate to a lot of what was shared. My son too potty trained himself right on to the "big toilet" pretty much instantly, in his timing, when he was ready. Sorted. Nothing for me to do.

It's not a long book nor does it go into loads of detail, it's entertaining as well as poignant and if you have not experienced any of Joan's books as yet then you should, her novels are fantastic and I really enjoyed reading some of these moments from Joan's incredible life that she chose to share.

Watch for those "snort" moments if reading this on public transport.

4 paw prints from Booklover Catlady for The Things You Missed While You Were Away. A really delightful read.
This lovely memoir of Joan Ellis' early life, and indeed that of her own daughter, Sophie, will strike a chord and pull at heart-strings of many people who grew up without one of their their parents around.

This short book is well written, without bitterness, in a humorous yet no nonsense way. Much is short paragraph tales of school days, school plays and random anecdotes of a little girl who quite obviously misses her daddy. A lovely book and much recommended.
This is a delightful vignette, hilarious at times, about the author's daughter, Sophie, her early life, and the trials and tribulations of being a single Mum. It is also an open letter to the author's absent father and in a conversational tone, it tells him about some of the experiences he missed as a father—things like changing her nappies (diapers), teaching her to ride a bike, watching her roles in school theatre productions, and most of all, being a grandfather to Sophie.

Everyone who has ever raised a child will have a quiet chuckle at Sophie's antics, like the following passage

"As soon as we arrived, she eyed Sophie’s sticky little fingers and precariously full nappy (diaper). When I saw her apartment, all white upholstery and rugs in pale hues, I knew my daughter was in clear and present danger."

The book is funny yet poignant because it illustrates the desperate longing a child whose father isn't around might experience, even when she is an adult. Anyone who has grown up without a father will understand about the void in this mother's life. She often parallels Sophie's experiences with her own, although Sophie is luckier because her father does take her out on a regular basis, albeit to sit in the pub.

If you're looking for some light reading that will put a smile on your face, add this story to your list.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
